Router fails to get WAN IP through DHCP

This is a common issue that is usually first noticed when a new router is introduced to an existing network. Most of the routers are configured by factory to get WAN IP through DHCP. It is recommended to confirm it by logging in to web interface.

Issue Cause :

C1: ISP has MAC address based lock
C2: Router and modem incompatible

Issue solution :

S1: Clone the MAC address of the previous device (PC/Old router) on the new router that is having trouble.
S2: Try with a cross-over cable.
S3: Assign a static IP on the router WAN (Use the same IP a PC gets when the PC is connected to modem directly)

If the above does not help, you can try the below steps and try S1, S2 and S3 again.

1. Update the Router and/or the modem with the latest firmware.
2. Consider rolling back the firmware to previous version if the issue started after a firmware upgrade.
3. Reset the device to factory default by pressing the reset button for 20+ seconds and manually reconfigure it. (Consider backing up the configuration of the device)

Devices that applies: Cisco RV042; Cisco RV180
